Law Enforcement memorial event

Those who fall serving honorably in the front lines of law enforcement may no longer be with us, but will forever be remembered by their families and loved ones.

In an effort to honor law enforcement officers taken in the line of duty, a Salute to Law Enforcement and fundraiser was held Saturday at the Imperial Valley Fairgrounds, Casa de Mañana building.

Kudos to the event organizers who put on an event that continues to memorialize our fallen law enforcement.

Yum Yum restaurant named Small Business of the Year

Through lean and fat years, the Yum Yum Chinese Food restaurant has remained a bedrock of the business community here and therefore earned the recognition of Small Business of the Year for the 56th California State Assembly District recently.

Dozens of local and Valley dignitaries arrived at the venerable eatery Friday to celebrate with owners Louis and Christina Wong. Since the summer of 1989 Yum Yum has kept to its business philosophy of serving customers in the community. And despite a slight downturn in business activity customers remain loyal and that is because the staff treats customers with a lot of respect.

Blake Zeleny signs to play at Utah Valley University

Recent Brawley Union High graduate Blake Zeleny has always envisioned himself playing college baseball. The 17-year-old set his sights on achieving a NCAA Div. I offer and a week ago, realized his goal after signing his letter of intent to play ball at Utah Valley University.

Zeleny was one of six athletes that signed to play a college sport during the ceremony and was one of two baseball players, including teammate Alex Hernandez, who will attend Azusa Pacific University. Congratulations to Zeleny and good luck in the next phase of his baseball career.

Alyce Gereaux re-opens with a splash

The grand re-opening of the Alyce Gereaux Park and new splash pad was aimed at neighborhood children but its true mark impacts the entire city and beyond.

Six years of planning finally paid off Tuesday as city dignitaries and community residents got a preview of diligent efforts to restore this park to grandeur the day before its official opening. The park would not exist if not for the efforts of parks and recreation and city employees as well as efforts of public safety personnel remarked Mayor Sam Couchman. Congratulations to the city of Brawley for making it happen and just in time for another hot summer.
