Imperial has annual youth volleyball camp
IMPERIAL — The Imperial High volleyball program hosted its annual camp this week, with Thursday marking the final day of learning for the event’s participants.
More than 60 local kids attended the camp, which was led by members of the Imperial High volleyball program.
The event has served as a fundraiser for the program for a number of years and has steadily increased in involvement and participation from local youngsters.
This year, the camp was open to boys and girls ages 5 through 14, who were split up into three groups based on age and skill.
Throughout the week, the participants worked on the fundamentals of the game including passing, setting, hitting, serving and blocking.
As Thursday was the final day of the camp, the participants were presented with their camp shirt, a certificate of completion and skills notebook.
Each group also recognized a handful of athletes their efforts throughout the camp, with certain kids earning Most Improved, Coach’s Award or MVP honors.
In the oldest or most advanced skill group, a pair of girls including Audrey Lucio and Marie Jose were awarded Co-MVP honors and each took home a volleyball signed by members of the San Diego State University volleyball team.
“I liked that all the girls were friendly and it was fun to learn new things.” Audrey Lucio, 13
“I enjoyed hitting and tipping the ball. It was exciting. There were a lot of girls here and even though it was only my second year I moved up to the third court.” Georgia Gomez, 11
“I liked that I got to learn new things. I love how competitive it is.” Marie Jose, 11
