BRAWLEY — Mothers and Men Against Gangs coalition debuts Teen Night Summer Session on Monday as a way for teens to interact with law enforcement officials in a safe and protected environment.

MAG Teens, an awareness club creating activities that are fun and safe, presents Summer Sessions for ages 13 to 17 at Inferno from 8 p.m. to midnight, 505 Main St., in Brawley on Monday.

“Similar to shop with a cop campaign, we aim to foster positive interactions with law enforcement and we’re encouraging all law enforcement agencies to allow uniformed male and female volunteers to escort teens to the dance,” said Yulil Alonso-Garza founder/president of MAG.

The intent is to foster a sound teen lifestyle that embraces positive choices by engaging in healthy lifestyle yet inform teens about the risks of smoking, alcohol drugs and gangs. Special law enforcement agencies from across the Valley were invited and are encouraged to engage youth in a dance off between themselves. Organizers anticipate teens will enjoy a night surrounded by outgoing and friendly officers and the event will succeed from a number of different aspects.

“The dancing with the cops component of this event strive to break down the barriers between youth and police with the intent of developing a more trusting relationship,” said Alonso-Garza. “It’s a first step in getting to know police officers in the community.”

MAG Teens began at the Enrique Camarena Jr. High School to create safe school culture from student perspectives. The organization aims to expand to schools throughout the county and stimulate a pattern shift in previous trends of school violence.

Admission is free but organizers request there be no “in and out” revolving through the door. This is a county wide event so all Valley teens are welcome. It is sponsored by PrimeLending, a national mortgage lender and Inferno

Drinks and food will be available for purchase at Inferno. The dress code is, cool summer chic. Music will be provided by DJ Ethos and supervision will be provided.
