No excuses with this jog-in-place move

- BY MARLO ALLEVA

Movement! It’s as simple as that. Are you moving? If not, why?

We all have time restraints, geographical hindrances and physical ailments from time to time, but if there is a will there is a way.

Our move today is a weighted jog-in-place. All you need is a set of hand weights and a flat surface. This move will get your blood flowing and cause nearly every inch of your body to be working toward balance and strength. And the best part, you will only be moving your feet up and down so space and distance won’t be an issue. This move is somewhat self-explanatory. You are simply going to jog in place. Hold the weights in each hand tucked in at your chest, for added resistance. Another option is to grab one weight with both hands to feel more balanced.

Hold your chest tall, your core engaged and proceed to start your jogging movement. You may want to start by marching in place, as a warm up, then steadily pick up the pace.

You can keep it light, with your feet close to the floor, slightly more intense by kicking your feet behind you, aiming for your glutes, or go all out with high knees in front of your body.

Obviously, the different levels will determine the duration of your jog, but you can switch it up at any point taking it high or low.

Since you won’t be moving forward during this exercise, you will have to gauge your time instead of distance. For example, instead of jogging a mile, shoot for jogging in place for 5 minutes. Take a small break, even setting the weights down, then return to your jog.

Try for your determined amount of time, for at least 3 sessions, with a few breaks in between if needed. Otherwise, keep it moving for 10 to 20 minutes.

This jog is a great way to warm up for any other exercises, or nifty all on its own! And the best part, you don’t have to go anywhere to do it.
