Culture program wraps up season

-

The Imperial Valley community demonstrated there is a lot of artistically talented youth, which was evident during the three months of the House of Culture program hosted at the Old Post Office Pavilion in El Centro.

In the old and historic building, young artists showcased their skills with singing, painting, sculpture, dance, theater, music and everything related to the arts.

The project is an effort that was made in conjunction with Mexicali, where a group of artists and teachers from the House of Culture proceeded through the Mexican Consulate.

The results were fruitful since the demand exceeded program expectations.

Bertha White, an instructor of Polynesian dances, said that the enthusiasm by the students was demonstrated from the first day. She taught girls from ages 3 on to adults.

“There was a lot of interest on the part of the community, several girls came to learn this dance where we taught them to dance Hawaiian and Tahitian. I was accepting girls from 3 years on and very beautiful, because they fell in love with the Polynesian dance and were interested in continuing dancing,” she said.

For White, the opportunity to teach this class has been motivating and interesting for students at an early age, because it gives them greater security in their integral development, as well as knowing another type of culture.

For the Polynesian dance teacher, who has been teaching this course for years in the county, the opening of the House of Culture opens new horizons in the discipline of the arts since the prices of the courses were accessible.

The recent closing ceremony featured the Consul of Mexico in Calexico, Carlos Flores, as well as El Centro Mayor Alex Cárdenas and local elected officials.

Authorities are hoping to reopen another season of the program soon, however no dates have been set so far.
