On Friday morning, a stabbing incident in the 400 block of West Fifth Street resulted in the death of an unidentifi­ed male victim, stated the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office.

A 35-year-old Holtville man was taken into custody at the scene on suspicion of murder by county Sheriff’s deputies on Friday morning, stated county Sheriff’s Office arrest records.

Erik M. Portugal was booked into county jail Friday afternoon and held on a $1 million bail, stated the arrest records.

County Sheriff’s deputies responded at 1 a.m. to a residence the 400 block of West Fifth Street after a reporting party requested an ambulance for an unknown subject that was possibly stabbed, stated county Sheriff’s Office activity logs.

Upon arrival, deputies located a male victim lying on the roadway, stated a county Sheriff’s Office press release. According to the activity logs, the victim suffered from trauma to the head which resulted “in a lot of blood.”

A Gold Cross ambulance on scene then requested a REACH helicopter at 1:28 a.m., stated activity logs.

The victim was transporte­d to El Centro Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries, stated the press release.

Portugal was then arrested by county Sheriff’s deputies at 8:45 a.m. Friday at the location in the question and booked into jail at 12:30 p.m. Friday, stated the arrest records.
