Alejandrin­a Herrera Zertuche, born April 24, 1946 passed away Saturday, June 17 2017, at Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center due to complicati­ons from Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Alejandrin­a “Mrs. Zertuche” was born in Culiacan, Sinaloa to Tobias Sanchez Herrera and Andrea Plascencia Herrera. She graduated from Calexico High School in 1964. She attended Imperial Valley College and transferre­d to the University of California Los Angeles.

After her studies, she returned to Calexico and began her teaching career at Calexico Unified School District (CUSD) at Rockwood Elementary School. She took a hiatus from teaching due to the worsening of her arthritis. She returned to CUSD as the Migrant Resource Teacher at Jefferson Elementary School and returned to the classroom to begin and finish her teaching career at Blanche Charles Elementary School. In addition to teaching she also tutored part-time at San Diego State University-Imperial Valley Campus.

Mrs. Zertuche enjoyed cheering on her CHS Bulldogs and UCLA Bruins. She was an avid supporter of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church-Calexico, Arts and Music activities for all ages, and foreign exchange programs in Imperial Valley. She was an American Field Service (AFS) host mother to Glynis Howard from Australia, Verena Buschinell­i (Second mom) from Brazil, and “Patch” Pichet Danthainum from Thailand.

Alejandrin­a is survived by her daughters Maria Andrea “Pearl” Zertuche, Margarita Luz “Lucy” Zertuche, siblings Ofelia Gonzalez, Rafael P. Herrera, Luz Cortes, Antonio P. Herrera, Silvia Mendez.

Visitation will be Sunday, July 2, 2017 at Hems Brothers Mortuary in Calexico from 6 to 9 p.m. Mass will be Monday, July 3, 2017 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Calexico at 8 a.m. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Calexico.
