Vikings, Eagles top spring CIF academic teams

- STAFF REPORT

The CIF-San Diego Section announced the Spring 2017 All-Academic teams and Section Scholars, with two Imperial Valley schools picking up multiple honors for various sports.

Holtville High and Southwest High both earned three Academic Team honors, while West Shores picked up two Academic Teams for the spring sports season.

The purpose of the All-Academic Teams and San Diego Section Scholars is to honor students who excel not only athletically, but academically as well.

The programs recognize some of the very brightest students in San Diego and Imperial Counties, according to the CIF-SDS website.

All-Academic Teams honor the teams in each sport that compile the highest, combined unweighted grade point average in their region of the CIF-San Diego Section.

The five regions of the San Diego Section are North, South, Metropolitan San Diego, East, and Inland (Imperial County).

In each of those regions, the team in each sport with the highest team GPA is recognized as the All-Academic Team.

San Diego Section Scholars are the junior or senior on each All-Academic Team with the highest cumulative, weighted GPA.

Each member of every All-Academic Team receives a personalized certificate from the CIF San Diego Section and each San Diego Section Scholar receives an additional certificate from the CIF.

For the Vikings, the baseball, boys’ golf and softball teams picked up the academic team honor, while a mix of students picked up the section scholar honor.

For baseball, Tavo Loya earned the scholar honor with a 4.0, Andy Pascual picked up the boys’ golf award with a 4.43 GPA and Emily Acosta earned the top score for softball with a 4.17.

For the Eagles, both swim teams and the boys’ tennis team picked up the region’s top team GPAs.

Individually, the Eagles’ Rex Kim had the top boys’ swim GP with a 4.15, Mia Cervantes has the top girls’ swim GPA with a 4.03 and Calvin Patel had the boys’ tennis top GPA with a 4.30.

Rounding out the spring sport team honors was West Shores, who had the highest team GPA for both track and field teams.

Gustavo Covarrubias had the boys’ scholar honor with a 4.25 GPA, while Karina Campo was the winner for the girls with a 3.40 GPA.
