Beer company sues protesters.
A Constellation Brands spokesperson made public a lawsuit filed against protesters who have blocked the company’s construction of a beer plant in southern Mexicali since Thursday.
The company’s spokeswoman Nina Mayagoitia said in an advertising announcement published in Tuesday’s newspapers that the lawsuit was filed to request authorities to intervene in the issue and to “avoid unnecessary risks.”
Constellation Brands has been building a $1.5 billion, 10-million hectoliter plant in southern Mexicali.
Members of the Mexicali Resiste movement have blocked the facilities since July 13 under allegations of non-mitigated environmental impact to the city’s underground water system.
Mayagoitia said the company has been worried for the blockade due to potential physical impact of workers, highway users, contractors and demonstrators.
The company reiterated the fact that the plant’s construction has all Mexican, state and local licenses and permits.
Constellation Brands said it is committed with the well-being, progress and development of the community, as well as with its workers and the responsible, sustainable use of natural resources.
According to media reports the state has suspended the construction of an aqueduct that would provide water to the plant.
In a press release the state said Mexico’s Secretary of Government Miguel Ángel Osorio expressed his support of the plant given the investment would generate new employment opportunities and development.
According to the announcement made in Tijuana the federal official said the government would not tolerate unclear interests refrain investments like this or from other companies from coming to the state and the country.
