IVC seeks candidate for trustee vacancy

- STAFF REPORT

Imperial Valley College is seeking to appoint a new trustee to fill the Trustee Area 5 seat vacated by the resignation of Juanita Salas, who stepped down June 30 when she took office as a board member at the Imperial Irrigation District.

“The Board of Trustees will meet in open session to interview and select an appointee who will serve the remainder of Ms. Salas’ term,” said IVC Attorney Frank Oswalt. “The Trustee Area 5 seat will then be open to qualified candidates at the November 2018 general election,” he added.

The IVC board will provisionally appoint a successor at a special adjourned meeting.

Qualified applicants must be registered voters and legal residents of Imperial Community College District, Area 5. “Only individuals meeting these qualifications are eligible to fill this vacancy,” Oswalt added.

Trustee Area 5 encompasses parts of El Centro east of Eighth Street, a large rural area east of El Centro, as well as parts of Heber, north of Heber Road and west of Dogwood Road.

Residents who are interested in being considered for this vacant position are urged to consult a map of Trustee Area boundaries posted on the IVC website at: https://www.imperial. edu/about/college-governance/board-of-trustees/ district-maps/

All IVC trustee areas, which formerly followed high school district boundaries, were redrawn in 2011 in an extensive redistricting process. At large balloting for trustees was also eliminated. They now are elected by voters residing within the districts they represent.

Application packets will be available in Area 5 beginning Monday, at the El Centro Chamber of Commerce offices, 1095 S. Fourth St., El Centro; Central Union High School District, 351 W. Ross Ave., El Centro; Imperial Valley College President’s Office, 380 E. Aten Road, Imperial; and Heber Elementary School District, 1052 Heber Ave., Heber. The packet will also be available at the Imperial Valley College website at https:// www.imperial.edu/

The completed packets must be received at the Imperial Valley College President’s Office before noon Aug. 18, to be eligible for consideration.

Salas was elected in June to the IID Board of Directors. She resigned from the IVC position on June 30.

The IVC Board has 60 days from the date of the resignation to make a provisional appointment; otherwise, a special election would be called at a substantial cost to the college.

The IVC board will conduct interviews and make the provisional appointment at a special meeting at 5 p.m. Aug. 24.
