K.W. students fare well at Worlds
Afew weeks ago, members of K.W. Karate/Tae Kwon Do Center here made the trip to Las Vegas to participate and compete in the 2017 International Training Conference and World Championships.
The El Centro program came home with numerous accolades as a school including School of the Year, Outstanding ITC Participation and Outstanding Membership Gold Level.
The school had a 28-member team representing Region No. 1 of the Chuck Norris System & United Fighting Arts Federation at the World Championships, with team members competing in forms, sparring, weapons and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
The local students, which varied in age and experience, competed alongside athletes from throughout the United States as well as Mexico, Brazil and Norway.
The competition was spread over three days, with seminars and classes being taught by world-renowned masters in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Krav Maga and the Chuck Norris System.
In attendance were JeanJacques Machado (Brazil/US BJJ), Danielle Martin (BJJ World Champion), Chip Wright (Black Belt Hall of Fame), Laurian Lapadatu (Krav Maga Canada) and others.
After the three-day competition, K.W. students amassed 12 first place finishes, 18 second place finishes and 12 third place finishes.

Karate/Tae Kwon Do Center Team members feel very fortunate to compete among some of the best in the Chuck Norris System and have a high standard to maintain within our divisions,” explained K.W. Master Instructor Clara Melendez. “In following the footsteps of our Grandmaster Chuck Norris as a six-time World Champion, we train smart, compete hard, stay humble and strive to spread the healthy Martial-Art spirit.”
