Unified Cargo Inspection Pilot Program at Cargo Facility
U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Friday it has partnered with Mexico’s Tax Administration Service in the Unified Cargo Processing Program at the Calexico Cargo Facility.
Under the Unified Cargo Processing pilot that commenced Friday, CBP and SAT will conduct joint cargo clearance examinations at the Calexico Cargo Facility — eliminating separate inspections and subsequently reducing wait times at the border, stated a U.S. Customs and Border Protection news release.
It is envisioned that the program will aid in the reduction of wait times and create more efficient examinations that will lower the cost of doing business in the region. It will also enhance national security for both countries demonstrating both the United States and Mexico’s shared commitment in facilitating cross-border commerce.
The hours of operation for the program will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The facility is closed on Sundays.
“I am pleased to have this program piloted at our Calexico Cargo Facility,” said Area Port Director David Salazar. “I anticipate that with the implementation of this program in our area, local trade stakeholders will observe a more efficient inspection process while maintaining the security of both nations.”
The Unified Cargo Processing Pilot Program was previously introduced at the Mariposa Cargo Facility in Nogales, Arizona in July of 2016.
Former Commissioner Kerlikowske, along with Assistant Commissioner Canales of the Mexican Federal Police, announced the first implementation of the program back in August of last year during a Building Strong Border Communities event at Pima Community College in Tucson, Ariz.
