Linking freshman students to the crew
Transitioning from middle school to high school can be a difficult time for any teenager. According to the Institute of Education Services in a study it published in 2010, it stated ninth grade is a “make or break” year for teenagers.
“During the ninth-grade year, many students for the first time have to earn passing grades in core courses, and these core courses are typically some of the toughest and most rigorous academic classes a student must take in high school,” the study stated.
“While the transition from middle school to high school can represent an important milestone, it can also be a time of loneliness, isolation, and disconnection for some students. This transition period is frequently marked by declining academic performance, increased absences, and increased behavior disturbances. These factors put freshmen more at risk than any other school-aged group,” it continued.
That’s where the Link Crew steps in. The Link Crew is a program introduced by the Boomerang Project which connects upperclassmen with incoming freshmen for a smooth transition.
“Link Crew is very instrumental in the future success of incoming freshman throughout the mentorship of upperclassmen in understanding the demands of high school,” said Calipatria High School Principal Joe Derma.
We’re happy to say that every public high school in the Valley has the program and we applaud them for doing so. Throughout the year, mentors meet with freshmen for various activities, from attending football games, field trips or simply interacting about daily occurrences.
A few schools started the first week of gatherings this past week while others will start this coming week. We commend not only the schools, but the teachers that coordinate these Crews locally - what they’re doing is further helping freshman strengthen their chance at a successful high school education and beyond.
If you’re a parent or a grandparent that has a teenager going into high school, encourage them to seek out the group at their respective school and participate. For more information go to www.boomerangproject.com
