Wildcats edged by Santana

SANTEE — The Brawley Union High School girls’ tennis team traveled to face Santana High on Thursday afternoon in a nonleague match here.

The Wildcats suffered a narrow loss falling 7-11 to the Sultans.

For Brawley, No. 1 singles’ player Sarah Huang fell 0-6 before winning 6-4 and 6-2.

No. 2 singles’ player Alyssa Ruiz won 6-2, fell 4-6 and won 6-1.

No. 3 player Jacqueline Valenzuela fell 0-6 and 0-6 and Eileen Traslavina subbed in for one match falling 0-6.

In doubles’ action the No. 1 team of Janira Figueroa and Sophia Marquez fell 2-6 won 6-4 and fell 4-6.

No. 2s Kayla Lee and Marisela Zamora won 6-1, fell 6-3 and won 6-4 and the No. 3 team of Meranda Villaverde and Elsa Nelson fell 0-6 in their first match before Madeline Swerdfeger subbed in for Nelson in the second and third rounds, where the team fell 2-6 and 2-6.

The Tigers fell 22-25 in the first game before winning the next three 25-19, 25-20 and 25-17.

For Imperial, Katie Gray had 10 kills and eight digs, Cady Davis had 10 kills, Lexi Retana had 21 assists and 17 service points, Alyssa Chavarria had five kills and seven digs, Ale De La Trinidad had seven digs and Jasmine Mejia had two kills and 16 service points.

Imperial improves to 4-5 overall and returns to action on Thursday traveling to face Palo Verde Valley at 6 p.m. for the Imperial Valley League opener.
