Don’t forget to vote for Gridiron Greats

The third week of the high school football season saw three teams improve to 3-0 with others putting up tough performanc­es against their opponents.

Along with the third week of the season came a new batch of Gridiron Greats nominees. A total of nine athletes were selected as nominees.

Readers can cast their votes for Gridiron Greats beginning at 8 a.m. today. Voting concludes at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

The winner will be announced in Friday’s print edition of the Imperial Valley Press.

Thadeo Campbell, Central Union High

The Central Union High School football team fought to improve to 3-0 on the season after defeating La Jolla 21-13 on Friday night.

Helping keep the Vikings off the scoreboard in the final quarter of the game was Thadeo Campbell.

Campbell had nine solo tackles and three assisted tackles for a total of 12 on the night. The junior also had six receptions and 94 yards of offense in the win.

Baraquiel Fimbres, Vincent Memorial

The Vincent Memorial High School football team sent a strong message after defeating Calexico High School 52-12 on Friday night.

In the win, Baraquiel Fimbres led the defense with eight solo tackles and two assisted tackles for a total of 10.

He also had two sacks, recovered a fumble and recorded a safety after tackling a Calexico player in the Vincent Memorial end zone.

Derek Guzman, Southwest High

The Southwest High School football team dominated against Kofa, winning 56-7 on Friday night.

Eagle senior Derek Guzman contribute­d in the game on offense and defense after finishing with six receptions, 102 yards and one receiving touchdown.

Guzman finished with three tackles on defense.

Trey McAllister, Southwest High

The Southwest High defense help Kofa to one touchdown in a 56-7 win on Friday night.

Leading the defense in the win was Trey McAllister. McAllister finished with 13 total tackles in the win and also recorded a sack that resulted in a loss of five yards.

Jonathan Medina, Central Union High

The Central Union High football team edged La Jolla 21-13 to improve to 3-0 on the season. Helping the Spartans in the win was Jonathan Medina.

Medina had 20 carries for 72 yards and scored a total of three rushing touchdowns in the game. He also finished with 103 yards of total offense and four receptions.

Deniro Osuna, Central Union High

Also helping Central Union High in its 2113 victory over La Jolla was quarterbac­k Deniro Osuna.

Osuna finished 25-37 for 324 passing yards on the night.

Daniel Rizzo, Vincent Memorial

The Vincent Memorial High football team recorded a stellar 52-12 win on Friday night over Calexico High.

In the win, Daniel Rizzo had 12 carries for 72 yards and also recorded two rushing touchdowns from two and 10 yards out.

Tyler Saikhon, Southwest High

Southwest High’s Tyler Saikhon gave another solid performanc­e for the Eagles in a 56-7 win over Kofa.

Saikhon finished with 148 rushing yards, 61 receiving yards, 55 kick return, 20 punt return and 25 intercepti­on return yards in the win on top of two rushing touchdowns and two receiving touchdowns.

On defense he had one intercepti­on and four tackles.

Jorge Villalobos, Calexico High

The Calexico High School football team suffered a tough 52-12 loss on Friday night to Vincent Memorial.

Helping the Bulldogs with both their scores was senior Jorge Villalobos.

Villalobos had a rushing touchdown from two yards out and also had a 47-yard touchdown pass to Manuel Segura.
