MAVIS O. WILSON (WOODS)

Mavis O. Wilson (Woods), 93, of El Centro, went home to the Lord, Saturday, September 9, 2017 in her home. She is reunited with her Savior Jesus Christ and our beloved Dad and Pop in heaven.
Mavis was born November 7, 1923 in Pryor OK to Estill Byron Woods and Minnie Hall Woods and moved to El Centro as a young child.
Mavis was married to Roland Lenard Wilson, of El Centro for 63 years before Roland’s passing in 2006. Mavis was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, staying at home to raise her three daughters, spending time with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren, and working part time as Sears.
Mavis was also very involved with her church family at El Centro First Assembly of God, where she attended from the age of 5. There, she faithfully served the women’s ministry, sharing her cooking and hospitality with family, friends, and others, whether for sickness and grief, or for celebration and fellowship. She also spent time visiting and encouraging other members of the church. Serving her savior was her passion, and she was able to continue serving him her whole life.
In her later years, Mavis became a fixture at Holtville Assembly of God, where she spent her time with her daughter Patti Dunnam ministering to the children of the church and community, as well as attending church services and prayer meetings.
She leaves behind a legacy of faithful service and fervent faith for her family, friends, and everyone who knew her.
For many, Marvis will be remembered for the afghan blankets she would crochet and give away as gifts to those around her. She would make them for family and friends, and always had a supply on hand for every occasion. Often she would meet a stranger in a store, and before they knew it they had a new friend, and a new afghan to take home. Chances are, if you knew Mavis, you have at least one of her afghans at home.
Mavis was married to her beloved Roland for 63 years. The couple loved to travel and spent 25 summers their 5th wheel across the country, meeting people who would become lifelong friends. At the end of every summer, they would make their way from Oregon back down to California, canning and pickling fruit and vegetables along the way.
Maivs was preceded in death by her husband Roland, and by her grandson, Christopher Lee Gomes.
Mavis is survived by her brother, Don Woods; sisters, Geraldine Cothern and Nadine Yates Leach; her daughters and their husbands Barbara Joann and Burl McAlister, Patricia and Jack Dunnam, and Susan and Jack Rufe; adopted daughters and their husbands Sharon and Dennis Johnson and Shirley and Buddy Ashurst; grandchildren Michael Foss and wife Michele Foss, Vance McAlister and wife Marilyn McAlister, Mark McAlister, Lenard Gomes and wife Mandy Gomes, and Cherece Appel; great- grandchildren Brittani Foss- Abubo and husband Aaron Abubo, Michael Brandon Foss and wife Heather Foss, Hannah McAlister, Colin McAlister, Christian Gomes, Jacob Gomes, Abbey Appel and Christopher Appel; great- great- granddaughter Dorothea Foss, to arrive in a few weeks; and a host of other family and friends. She will always be loved and remembered by them all.
Memorial will be held Monday, September 18, 2017 at 10 a.m., at Holtville First Assembly of God, 801 Holt Ave. Holtville, preceded by a viewing at 9 a.m.
