Southwest blanks Yuma

YUMA — The Southwest High football recorded its second shutout of the season after toppling Yuma, 50-0, here on Friday night.

With the win, the Eagles move to 4-0 on the season.

Southwest put up 21 points in the first quarter, 14 in the second and eight and seven in the third and fourth, respective­ly.

The Eagles have a bye next week and return to action on Sept. 29 to host Gila Ride for their homecoming game.

GIRLS’ GOLF Imperial edges Southwest for win

YUMA — The second Imperial Valley League girls’ golf match of the season was a close one between local teams at Cocopah Golf Resort here on Thursday afternoon.

The defending champions of Imperial High School worked to top the meet with a score of 260 edging Southwest High School that came in second with a 278.

Falling in behind the Eagles were Holtville (284), Brawley (292), Palo Verde Valley (318) and Central (340).

Earning medalist honors at the meet were Imperial’s Morgan Preece and Raegan Preece, who both shot a 42 on the par36 course.

Taking third was Vincent Memorial High School’s Jimenna Ramirez with a 45, while Imperial’s Demi Preece took fourth after finishing one stroke behind with a 46.

Rounding out the top five finishers at the meet was Southwest High’s Kayla Howard with a 47.

Heading into next week’s meet, Imperial leads with 14 points, followed by Southwest with 12 and Holtville with 10.

The third IVL meet of the season will be played at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Coachella Valley Club in La Quinta.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL Brawley tops Calexico

BRAWLEY — The Brawley Union High School volleyball team cruised to its second Imperial Valley League win of the season after sweeping Calexico High School here on Thursday night.

The Wildcats won 2510, 25-12, 25-13.

Logan Nemlowill paced the team in kills and Jalyn Ayala paced the team in service points.

Both teams return to action next week with Calexico traveling to face West shores at 4 p.m. on Monday and Brawley hosting Southwest at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Tigers open with win

BLYTHE — The Imperial High volleyball team opened IVL action on the road traveling to face Palo Verde Valley here on Thursday night.

The co-defending champs were able to open with a win after defeating the Yellowjack­ets in five sets.

The Tigers rallied back from a 0-2 start after falling 20-25 and 21-25 in the first two games.

Imperial then came back to sweep the final three games winning 2517, 25-22 and 15-12.

For the Tigers, Lexi Retana tallied 35 assists, Alyssa Chavarria had nine kills and nine digs and Cady Davis had 13 kills.

Also for Imperial, Katie Gray also had 13 kills, four assists and eight digs, Abby Ormand had six kills and Ale De La Trinidad had 20 digs.

The Tigers move to 5-5 on the season and 1-0 in IVL play and return to action on Tuesday to host Holtville High School at 6 p.m.
