Don’t forget to vote for Gridiron Greats

The sixth week of the high school football season featured seven intense and hard-fought games featuring local teams.

The action produced nearly one dozen Gridiron Great nominees.

Readers can cast their votes for Gridiron Greats beginning at 8 a.m. today. Voting concludes at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

The winner will be announced in Friday’s print edition of the Imperial Valley Press.

Javier Briseño, Vincent Memorial High

The Vincent Memorial Catholic High School football team played a tough game against Central Union High School on Friday, yet ultimately fell 56-41.

In the game, junior Javier Briseño scored a total of four touchdowns. Briseño had one rushing touchdown and three receiving touchdowns.

He also finished with 36 rushing yards and 51 receiving yards in the game.

Thadeo Campbell, Central Union

The Central Union High football team moved to 5-0 on the season after defeating Vincent Memorial 56-41 on Friday night.

Helping the Spartans on offense and defense in the win was Thadeo Campbell.

On offense the junior had six receptions for 140 yards and one receiving touchdown and on defense had three intercepti­ons, one pick-six and five total tackles.

Justin Cordova, Southwest High

Southwest High School moved to 5-0 on the year after topping Gila Ridge High School 30-0 on Friday.

Helping the Eagle offense in the win was Justin Cordova.

The senior finished with a rushing touchdown from 18 yards out in the win.

Diego Hernandez, Imperial High

The Imperial High School football squad overcame a heavy opponent on Friday after defeating Rancho Buena Vista 24-14 on Friday night.

In the win, senior Diego Hernandez led the defense with 12 total tackles, two tackles for loss and also caused one fumble.

Casey Kline, Brawley Union High

Brawley Union High School faced a tough Morse team on Friday falling 24-14 to the Tigers.

In the games, junior quarterbac­k Casey Kline had a 29-yard rushing touchdown for the Wildcats.

Cameron Jungers, Southwest High

Senior quarterbac­k Cameron Jungers helped Southwest to a 30-0 victory over Gila Ridge on Friday.

Jungers had a 10-yard rushing touchdown in the win as well as two passing touchdowns.

Jacob Leyba, Holtville High

Holtville High School bounced back from a tough loss on Sept. 22 to come back and defeat Escondido Charter 4813 on Friday night.

In the win, Jacob Leyba had five carries for 193 yards and two touchdowns for the Vikings.

Jonathan Medina, Central Union High

Central Union High saw an outstandin­g effort from Jonathan Medina in its 56-41 win over Vincent Memorial on Friday night.

Medina had 22 carries for 189 yards to go with four rushing touchdowns. He also had one reception for 21 yards that resulted in a touchdown, bringing his game-total to five.

Michael Moreno, Brawley Union High

Brawley Union High suffered a tough 24-14 loss to Morse on Friday, yet not before a group of Wildcats gave the visitors a run for their money. In the game, Michael Moreno notched a 46yard rushing touchdown for the Wildcats in the first quarter of the game.

Andy Pascual, Holtville High

Holtville High pounced on Escondido Charter on Friday night winning 48-13. In the win, senior Andy Pascual helped with 14 carries for 123 yards and three touchdowns on the night.

Joey Tarango, Imperial High

Imperial High topped Rancho Buena Vista 2414 on Friday night, with junior Joey Tarango filling in at the quarterbac­k position for the Tigers.

In the win, Tarango went 12-19 with 154 yards and one passing score. On the ground Tarango had eight carries for 69 yards with three rushing touchdowns.
