The community is encouraged to attend the Heffernan Memorial Healthcare District’s (HMHD) first-ever health fair Saturday, where free health screenings and health–related information will be provided.

In the past, Heffernan Memorial had collaborated with other local organizations and entities to organize community health fairs, but this time decided to take the reins itself to highlight the public health-related initiatives it is undertaking on behalf of the city, said HMHD Board President Sylvia Bernal.

“We really want to make it a success,” Bernal said. “It’s not just for seniors, it’s for everybody.”

Representatives of various public and private agencies will be on hand to inform the public of health services and resources available to the community.

Health insurance providers will also be in attendance to help residents enroll in health insurance plans, Bernal said.

Free public transportation will also be provided to seniors by the Calexico Transit System, which will pick up seniors from designated senior housing apartments and transport them to the health fair.

The HMHD’s health fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Rockwood Plaza.

The Heffernan Memorial Healthcare District also recently agreed to pay the cost of providing free flu vaccinations on Tuesday at the city’s Community Center, located at 707 Dool Ave., Bernal said.

Tuesday’s vaccination clinic is a collaborative effort with the city of Calexico. Flu vaccinations will not be available at Saturday’s health fair.
