CALIFORNIA BRIEFS LOS ANGELES Hot temps bring health, fire warnings

Triple-digit temperatures are forecast for parts of Southern California at the start of the week and the risk of fire is extreme.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said Sunday that red flag warnings were in effect from Santa Barbara to San Diego as high winds and low humidity are forecast.

Cal Fire says extra firefighters are on duty with Santa Ana winds expected to gust to 55 mph.

The National Weather Service says temperatures in excess of 100 degrees forecast Monday and Tuesday could break records for late October in some cities.

The weather service has issued an excessive heat warning and says people should limit strenuous outdoor activity.

Temperatures aren’t supposed to cool significantly until Thursday.

SAN DIEGO FAA: Fate of those aboard plane that crashed unknown

The FAA says a plane crashed near El Capitan Reservoir in San Diego County but the fate of those aboard was unknown.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that an FAA spokesman said the agency was told a small plane with two people aboard was reported missing Saturday after it left Gillespie Field in El Cajon. The crash started a brush fire that grew to at least 20 acres by nightfall, and U.S. Forest Service firefighters battled the flames.

The newspaper reported that authorities were not able to confirm until evening that charred debris at the north end of the reservoir was the plane’s wreckage. No survivors were found.
