Don’t forget to vote for Gridiron Greats

The ninth week of the high school football team saw a handful of exciting matchups between local schools.

Earning solid wins on Friday were the teams from Brawley Union High School, Central Union High School, Holtville High School and Southwest High School, with a total of seven athletes receiving placement on the week nine Gridiron Greats list.

Readers can cast their votes for Gridiron Greats beginning at 8 a.m. today. Voting concludes at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

Angel Nava-Esparza, Central Union High

The Central Union High football team moved to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in IVL action after topping Palo Verde Valley High School 50-20 on Friday night.

In the win, Spartan sophomore Angel Nava-Esparza finished with three rushing touchdowns and totaled 53 yards on five carries for Central.

Derek Guzman, Southwest High

Southwest High kept its perfect season intact after defeating Imperial High School 34-6 on Friday night.

In the victory, Derek Guzman had solid defense and offense as he intercepte­d a Tiger pass and also rushed for 29-yard touchdown.

George Mickle, Brawley Union High

Brawley Union High bounced back from a loss in week eight to topple Calexico High School 56-7 on Friday night.

In the victory, senior George Mickle recorded two scores for the Wildcats including a 6-yard rush and a 23yard reception.

Michael Moreno, Brawley Union High

Brawley Union High junior Michael Moreno helped the Wildcats to a 56-7 victory over Calexico High on Friday night to get back in the win column.

In the win, Moreno had two rushing scores from 17 and 10 yards out.

Deniro Osuna, Central Union High

The Central Union High football team recorded a stunning 5020 win over Palo Verde Valley on Friday night to move to 2-1 in IVL action.

Helping lead the Spartans to the win was sophomore quarterbac­k Deniro Osuna.

Osuna finished 17for-29 with 244 passing yards and two touchdown passes in the win.

Andy Pascual, Holtville High

Holtville High recorded a solid shutout win over Antelope High School on Friday night, winning 40-0 in the nonleague contest.

In the victory, senior Andy Pascual had seven carries for 62 yards including a 41-yard score.

Tyler Saikhon, Southwest High

Southwest High senior Tyler Saikhon helped the Eagles take back the Johnny Romero Fireman’s Helmet game from Imperial High for the first time since 2010 after defeating the Tigers 34-6.

In the win, Saikhon rushed for three touchdowns from 13, 7 and 6 yards out.
