9 nods in 10th week

The 2017 regular high school football season will close later this week marking the end of another exciting year of Gridiron Greats nominees.

Yet before the regular season wraps up, there are still week 10 and 11 players to vote on.

During Friday’s week10 games, a total of nine athletes stood out for their respective teams, earning themselves Gridiron Greats nomination­s.

Readers can cast their votes for Gridiron Greats beginning at 8 a.m. today. Voting concludes at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

The winner will be announced in Friday’s print edition of the Imperial Valley Press.

Ivan Avalos, Vincent Memorial High School

The Vincent Memorial High football team is one win away from a perfect Manzanita League season after edging Holtville High 27-20 last week.

In the win, Ivan Avalos finished with 10 total tackles, one intercepti­on that he returned for six yards and also totaled 62 all-purpose yards on offense.

Joseph Castillo, Central Union High School

The Central Union High football team moved to 3-1 in IVL following a 48-14 toppling of Calexico High on Friday night.

In the win, junior Joseph Castillo rushed for two touchdowns for the Spartans.

Castillo finished with 141 rushing yards on just six carries for his team.

Brandon Hueso, Imperial High School

The Imperial High football team suffered a narrow 27-20 loss to Brawley Union High on Friday.

Despite the result, the Tigers’ Brandon Hueso turned in a gutsy performanc­e rushing for 105 yards on 21 carries and scoring two rushing touchdowns from 23and 11-yards out.

Derek Guzman, Southwest High School

Southwest High is one win away from finishing the regular season undefeated after toppling Palo Verde Valley 60-0 on Friday.

Finding the end zone three times in the win was Derek Guzman.

The Eagle senior scored on rushes of 1 and 70 yards and recovered a fumble in the end zone for his third touchdown of the game.

Casey Kline, Brawley Union High School

Casey Kline worked through a shoulder injury to help Brawley Union High beat Imperial 27-20 on Friday night.

In the game, Kline had two receiving touchdowns from 19 and 31 yards out.

Jonathan Medina, Central Union High School

The Central Union High football team topped Calexico High 48-14 on Friday, with sophomore Jonathan Medina turning in a solid effort for the Spartans.

Medina rushed for 82 yards on six carries and also scored two rushing touchdowns in the win. Michael Moreno, Brawley Union High

The Brawley Union High football team worked to top Imperial High 27-20 on Friday night.

In the win, Wildcat junior Michael Moreno had two rushing scores from 11- and 6-yards out.

Andy Pascual, Holtville High School

The Holtville High football team suffered a tough and last-second loss to Vincent Memorial High on Friday, falling 27-20 to the Scots.

In the game, Viking senior Andy Pascual turned in a solid effort for his team.

Pascual had a 1-yard rushing touchdown and a 5-yard rushing score as well.

Tyler Saikhon, Southwest High School

Southwest High senior Tyler Saikhon led Southwest to a 60-0 win over Palo Verde Valley last week.

Against the Yellowjack­ets, Saikhon had four rushing touchdowns, scoring on runs of 3, 8, 8 and 82 yards.
