9 nods in 10th week

The 2017 reg­u­lar high school foot­ball sea­son will close later this week mark­ing the end of another ex­cit­ing year of Grid­iron Greats nom­i­nees.

Yet be­fore the reg­u­lar sea­son wraps up, there are still week 10 and 11 play­ers to vote on.

Dur­ing Fri­day’s week10 games, a to­tal of nine ath­letes stood out for their re­spec­tive teams, earn­ing them­selves Grid­iron Greats nom­i­na­tions.

Read­ers can cast their votes for Grid­iron Greats be­gin­ning at 8 a.m. to­day. Vot­ing con­cludes at 2 p.m. on Thurs­day.

The win­ner will be an­nounced in Fri­day’s print edi­tion of the Im­pe­rial Val­ley Press.

Ivan Ava­los, Vin­cent Memo­rial High School

The Vin­cent Memo­rial High foot­ball team is one win away from a per­fect Man­zanita League sea­son af­ter edg­ing Holtville High 27-20 last week.

In the win, Ivan Ava­los fin­ished with 10 to­tal tack­les, one in­ter­cep­tion that he re­turned for six yards and also to­taled 62 all-pur­pose yards on of­fense.

Joseph Castillo, Cen­tral Union High School

The Cen­tral Union High foot­ball team moved to 3-1 in IVL fol­low­ing a 48-14 top­pling of Calex­ico High on Fri­day night.

In the win, ju­nior Joseph Castillo rushed for two touch­downs for the Spar­tans.

Castillo fin­ished with 141 rush­ing yards on just six car­ries for his team.

Bran­don Hueso, Im­pe­rial High School

The Im­pe­rial High foot­ball team suf­fered a nar­row 27-20 loss to Braw­ley Union High on Fri­day.

De­spite the re­sult, the Tigers’ Bran­don Hueso turned in a gutsy per­for­mance rush­ing for 105 yards on 21 car­ries and scor­ing two rush­ing touch­downs from 23and 11-yards out.

Derek Guz­man, South­west High School

South­west High is one win away from fin­ish­ing the reg­u­lar sea­son un­de­feated af­ter top­pling Palo Verde Val­ley 60-0 on Fri­day.

Find­ing the end zone three times in the win was Derek Guz­man.

The Ea­gle se­nior scored on rushes of 1 and 70 yards and re­cov­ered a fum­ble in the end zone for his third touch­down of the game.

Casey Kline, Braw­ley Union High School

Casey Kline worked through a shoul­der in­jury to help Braw­ley Union High beat Im­pe­rial 27-20 on Fri­day night.

In the game, Kline had two re­ceiv­ing touch­downs from 19 and 31 yards out.

Jonathan Me­d­ina, Cen­tral Union High School

The Cen­tral Union High foot­ball team topped Calex­ico High 48-14 on Fri­day, with sopho­more Jonathan Me­d­ina turn­ing in a solid ef­fort for the Spar­tans.

Me­d­ina rushed for 82 yards on six car­ries and also scored two rush­ing touch­downs in the win. Michael Moreno, Braw­ley Union High

The Braw­ley Union High foot­ball team worked to top Im­pe­rial High 27-20 on Fri­day night.

In the win, Wild­cat ju­nior Michael Moreno had two rush­ing scores from 11- and 6-yards out.

Andy Pas­cual, Holtville High School

The Holtville High foot­ball team suf­fered a tough and last-sec­ond loss to Vin­cent Memo­rial High on Fri­day, fall­ing 27-20 to the Scots.

In the game, Vik­ing se­nior Andy Pas­cual turned in a solid ef­fort for his team.

Pas­cual had a 1-yard rush­ing touch­down and a 5-yard rush­ing score as well.

Tyler Saikhon, South­west High School

South­west High se­nior Tyler Saikhon led South­west to a 60-0 win over Palo Verde Val­ley last week.

Against the Yel­low­jack­ets, Saikhon had four rush­ing touch­downs, scor­ing on runs of 3, 8, 8 and 82 yards.
