Imperial Valley College tangles with the MiraCosta Spartans on Saturday to decide the Desert Conference football championship.

IVC coach Don Rigers gained a first-place tie last Saturday in Palm Desert, his Arabs defeating College of the Desert, 26-14.

IVC had no easy time with the Roadrunners. COD scored first and held the Arabs to a 1414 halftime tie. Coach Chuck Piper’s defensive crew took full control of things in the second half.

It marked the sixth victory of the season for IVC. Five of the triumphs came in Desert Conference games.

“After looking at the films, we feel our defense did a good job,” Rogers said. The Arabs stopped COD four times inside the IVC 40. Once, the Roadrunners worked down to the two and couldn’t score.

Ogeden Environmental Services, Inc., Tuesday filed a notice of intent to develop a hazardous waste incinerator northeast of Calipatria in the general vicinity proposed by some officials for a single Valley disposal area.

The notice for the incinerator — capable of burning up to 10,000 tons of toxic waste a year — was field in the Sacramento Office of Permit Assistance just days after several county officials, including three members of the Board of Supervisors, toured Ogden’s research and development toxics incinerator in La Jolla.

The action makes Ogeden the second hazardous waste incinerator to start through the state’s Tanner process for siting in the Valley. Cal Land Financial filed a notice of intent in July for a $100 million plant near Salton City, which drew angry area residents to a public hearing in September. To date no application for a county permit to develop the project has been filed, although Cal Land’s Jim Scott said he will seek permits.

The Eagles rebounded from a game one loss to down the Blackhawks 9-15, 15-7, 15-10, 11-15 and 15-10.

“The girls definitely earned it,” Southwest coach Debbie Gordon said. “This was an even match. Both teams played well, but we were able to come back from our mistakes. It was a nice win.”
