Scots, Cats top honors list
The Imperial Valley League girls’ tennis season came to a close earlier this month, with the IVL Championships helping decide this year’s All-League honorees.
This year’s championships were held at Southwest High, here, and held over the course of two days with the second day of action seeing the crowning of the individual and doubles’ IVL champions.
Winning the individual title and Player of the Year distinction this season was Vincent Memorial’s Ana Fernanda Villarreal.
To win the honor, the Scot senior overcame an injury that sidelined her for half of her junior season.
Villarreal then returned for her final year to win the top singles’ honor and also help her team to an undefeated league title this season.
In CIF play, Villarreal helped the Scots to an appearance in the CIF-San Diego Section Div. III quarterfinals and a first-round, 16-2 win, over Mission Bay.
While this year’s top individual honor went to a Scot, the doubles’ championships remained at Brawley Union High for another year.
A pair of Wildcats won the title last season, with another pair of Cats working to keep the title in Brawley for another year.
This season it was the doubles’ team of Kayla Lee and Alyssa Ruiz that swept their way through the doubles’ tourney.
Lee was part of last season’s championship team after partnering with Leslie Gonzalez during the season, making the 2017 crown her second consecutive doubles’ title.
Lee and Ruiz both just completed their junior seasons, meaning they’ll likely both be back to defend their title next season.
