CALEXICO — Council here recently unanimously voted to authorize city staff to lease 15 vehicles through a new program in hopes of saving the city expenses as it looks to replace an aging vehicle fleet.

According to city documents, the Public Works Department owns and maintains more than 25 vehicles, whose average age of use is nine years.

Some of those vehicles have outlived their average use time and need to be replaced to ensure employees drive safe and efficient vehicles.

Authorities plan to rent one SUV and 14 utility trucks from the company Enterprise Fleet Management, through a program called Interlocal Purchasing System.

The program allows government entities to lease vehicles with terms of 60 months with an open-ended equity lease, giving the city the option to continue using the vehicle in the fleet after a $400 service charge or exchange the equity in the vehicle for a new replacement vehicle after the end of the 60-month term.

City staff requested only 15 of the 25 vehicles be replaced under this program as a pilot process to determine how the leasing program better serves the city with long-term vehicle needs.

The city is expected to pay about $91,045.08 per year for the 15 vehicles under the program. Previously, the city would pay the entire cost of the vehicle upfront.

The private company maintains similar agreements with a total of 111 government agencies throughout California through the Interlocal Purchasing System program.
