Two hospitalized following collision
Two drivers sustained major injuries after a two-vehicle collision that occurred Monday afternoon on Austin Road, stated a California Highway Patrol news release.
Following the collision, Victor A. Carrillo, a 31-year-old Brawley resident, was transported to Pioneers Memorial Hospital while Alberto Arce, a 31-year-old Imperial resident, was transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center.
At approximately 1 p.m. Monday, Carrillo was driving a 2016 Nissan southbound on Austin Road at unknown speed approaching the intersection with Keystone Road. Arce was driving a 2010 International Pro Star semitruck eastbound on Keystone, approaching the intersection with Austin.
For reasons still under investigation, Carrillo failed to stop at the posted stop sign and allowed his vehicle to travel through the intersection directly in the path of Arce’s vehicle. Arce attempted to steer his vehicle to the right to avoid the collision, but was unable to stop prior to colliding with Carrillo.
The impact of the collision propelled Carillo’s vehicle to an easterly direction into an agriculture field and eventually coming to rest on its wheels facing an easterly direction.
The impact caused Arce’s vehicle to veer off the right shoulder and become partially submerged in water inside the West Main canal.
Keystone was closed for traffic from Austin to State Route 86 for approximately three hours. Both parties were wearing seatbelts and drugs or alcohol was not a factor, confirmed the news release.
