A former official from the state Preventive Police Department was arrested Saturday by Mexican authorities for his alleged involvement in the kidnapping of a journalist.

The Mexican Attorney General’s office said in a press release, Fabricio “Doe” was arrested in connection with the kidnapping and torturing of Tijuana Sin Censura news website publisher Mariano Rafael Soto.

The journalist filed a report at the Mexican agency after his alleged kidnapping in mid-February.

The victim said state police officers tortured him.

The claim includes former Secretary of Public Safety Daniel de la Rosa and Governor Francisco Vega.

The Mexican Attorney General’s office, known in Spanish as PGR, opened an investigation after the incident.

The PGR said the suspect was arrested on charges of false imprisonment and robbery.

News website Radio Formula identified the suspect as Fabricio Ruiz Valenzuela, now former Assistant Operations Chief of the state Preventive Police Department.

The suspect’s arrest was requested by the PGR’s Specialized Attorney for Crimes against Freedom of Speech.

Mexican police officers found and arrested the suspect without incident in an undisclosed area of Mexicali. State Secretary of Public Safety Gerardo Sosa Olachea said the local agency was aware of the arrest and gave directions to the agency’s Internal Affairs to follow up the apprehension’s next steps.
