CORRECTING THE RECORD

-

An article on Nov. 19 about a La Jolla retreat by the Heffernan Memorial Healthcare District misstated the connection between Angelica Tellechea, Melinda Guzman, Cynthia Moreno and Alejandro Vílchez with the Heffernan Memorial Healthcare District. Tellechea was a consultant for the district who was contracted as a grant writer and to coordinate a special meeting retreat in July in La Jolla. Guzman, Moreno and Vílchez were invited speakers at the retreat. All four were incorrectly labeled as staffers for the district. The board spent about $13,000 on the retreat. The Nov. 19 article erroneously stated those fees included golf, valet and room charges in the overline. Those separate fees were reimbursed by the retreat participants to the district. Board members that attended the retreat were Gloria Romo, Hector Martinez and Rodolfo Valdez. A quote was attributed to Martinez as saying, “We had a great time,” but the article failed to clarify it was a paraphrased statement he made during a following board meeting July 19 and was published in that meeting’s minutes. The article mistakenly stated Board of Trustees Norma Apodaca and Sylvia Bernal voted against the retreat, however, Apodaca voted in favor and Bernal abstained.
