Can ECPD patrol near Costco?

-

QA while back, the Imperial Valley Press published an article about the no left turn sign by Payless Shoe Source store and Aldi. There is a sign on the parking lot at Costco that says “Right Turn Only” but no one seems to pay attention to it. What can be done about it? I’m afraid there is going to be an accident one of these days. — Concerned Motorist, El Centro

Just to give some quick context, El Centro Police held traffic enforcement details throughout the summer at the intersection between Cruickshank Drive and Cottonwood Drive. Heading west on Cruickshawnk, next to Chase Bank, there is a traffic sign that prohibits a left turn onto Cottonwood which many motorists were not following.

The difference between that sign prohibiting left turns on to Cottonwood is that it was placed by the city, while the sign at Costco was not.

The Costco sign is not enforceable because it was erected on private property said El Centro Police Cmdr. Robert Sawyer.

However, “that’s not to say we won’t have officers look to cite motorists in the area that pose a danger to others, we just might not be able to enforce that particular violation,” he said.

The great news is the ECPD was recently awarded the Office of Traffic Safety grant which will provide ECPD officers overtime efforts on traffic safety issues throughout the city.

“Every effort will be made to deploy resources in strategic locations where traffic concerns have been identified,” Sawyer said. “So yes, in the near future we can have an officer look into this concern.”
