Cameron Jungers
Southwest High senior quarterback
EL CENTRO — In the biggest game of his life, Southwest High senior quarterback Cameron Jungers did not disappoint. During the team’s CIF State championship game against Milpitas High on Saturday night, the senior quarterback threw for five touchdown passes and 251 yards.
“It was definitely because of my teammates and coaches,” Jungers said about his five-touchdown performance, which was the most he’s ever thrown for in a single game throughout his high school career.
For his five touchdowns, Jungers connected with teammates Tyler Saikhon, who scored twice from 69 yards and 19 yards, Grant Hansink for 49 yards, Derek Guzman for 80 yards and Ryan Silva for 34 yards.
“Cameron helped us out tremendously,” expressed Eagles head coach John Mitosinka on Saturday. “He threw the ball so well and those scrambles he had for all those yards were crucial. Our running game wasn’t working for us, but the pass was. He played great.”
Ultimately, the Eagles fell just short against Milpitas, 45-41. Despite this, the senior quarterback stated that playing in a state championship is something he’ll cherish his entire life.
“It was really exciting, just seeing all the fans and all the support that we had, it made it a really special game for us,” recalled Jungers during Saturday’s game.
Jungers finished his senior season with 21 passing touchdowns, 1,659 total passing yards, completing 81 out of 150 passes, averaged 118.5 pass yards per game and threw for only six interceptions.
“I know we didn’t win the championship, but just the amazing season we had was something I’ll never forget,” stated the quarterback, who helped his team this year finish the regular season with an undefeated record, win an Imperial Valley League title, a CIF
San Diego Section Div. 3 Championship, a Southern California 4-A Regional Championship and finish as runners-up in the CIF State Division 4-A Championship.
Throughout his three-year career as varsity quarterback, Jungers scored 44 passing touchdown, had a total of 3,510 passing yards, averaged 103.2 yards per game, completed 164 of 288 attempts and threw for 17 interceptions.
