What’s going on?

- KARINA LOPEZ

With the Winter Olympics in full swing, I finally decided to tune into NBC on Wednesday night to see what they had to offer.

I got lucky and saw that the preliminary women’s hockey game between USA and Canada was showing.

Now, I know nothing about hockey, but I love “The Mighty Ducks” — who doesn’t — and team USA was playing so I continued to watch.

By the end of the game I’d yelled at the television at least a dozen times, scoffed at the referee’s decision against awarding USA a late goal and thought, “We’ll see them again in the gold-medal match.”

As I angrily flipped the channel to tune into something else, I couldn’t help but laugh at getting so worked up about a sport I never watch or even understand.

This reminded me of the sports I cover here in the Imperial Valley. For the most part, all of the sports played at the local high schools I understand 100 percent.

Yet there is one sport I comprehend at the same level I do hockey, and that sport is wrestling.

I’ve only ever covered a handful of matches during the Imperial Valley League season and as soon as I walk up to the winning coach I immediately tell them, “I have no idea what’s going on.”

They usually laugh, tell me it’s OK, then begin to give me a small lesson on what went down.

Similar to hockey, while I don’t know what’s happening on the mat, I’m still excited about the athletic contest in front of me — perhaps it’s the dim lights, screaming parents or coaches yelling in the corner. Or maybe it’s the referee raising the arm of the winning wrestler for all to see.

Either way this sport has definitely grown on me through the years and I hope to one day be able to provide it the coverage it needs and deserves.

That being said, I wish all of our local wrestlers the best of luck as they compete in the CIF-San Diego Section Masters tournament on Friday and Saturday.

I look forward to learning and writing about your accomplishments next week.
