’Cats advance to CIF tourney with win

BRAWLEY – The Brawley Union High girls’ basketball team used a solid third-quarter performanc­e to ultimately beat Patrick Henry, 65-54, in a CIFSan Diego Section Div. II play-in game here Monday night.

With the victory, the Wildcats advance to the Div. II tourney as the No. 12 seed and will travel to face Carlsbad at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

In the third quarter against the Patriots, the Wildcats outscored the visitors 21-12, to go up 49-37 as the game went into the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats and the Patriots gave equally tough performanc­es in the first and second quarters, resulting in a tied game at the end of each period, first, 16-16, then 28-28 at the half.

Brawley then quickly began building a lead to open the third quarter with help from Angie Zamudio and Emily Godsey.

Zamudio had six points in the third quarter, while Godsey chipped in five.

Zamudio, a starting sophomore, finished with a game-high 27 points, helping lead the Wildcats to the win.

“It was just an amazing experience,” Zamudio said. “We all came in as a team to win this game.” Zamudio said she felt both nervous and excited before the start of her first playoff game. a good team.”

Fellow Wildcat and senior Alizé Garcia echoed Zamudio’s sentiments and said she was excited to continue playing.

“All of us play well together on and off the court,” Garcia said.

Garcia served as the team’s point guard in the win, helping move the ball and hold off a Patriot rally in the fourth quarter.

Patrick Henry did outscore Brawley 17-15 in the fourth quarter, yet the Wildcats’ defense kept the game in their favor for the remainder of the game.
