Jeremy Tucker wins the 90th Elmer Sears Lettuce golf Tournament
BRAWLEY — Jeremy Tucker took home his second title in the 90th annual Elmer Sears Lettuce Golf Tournament at the Del Rio Country Club here Sunday.
He beat Blaise Smith in the championship flight after 34 holes of the scheduled 36-hole match. With two holes left, Tucker led by three holes in the match-play format, eliminating any possibility of Smith winning the title.
“I had some great matches,” Tucker said during his trophy acceptance speech. “Thank you to the Lettuce committee; they did such a great job. It was fun, and I love the fact that everyone is excited and wants to come back next year.”
Tucker had previously won in 2015 and finished runner-up in 2016 and 2017.
“I had a great time out there. I couldn’t have lost to a better player and a better guy,” Smith said.
The four-day tournament started Thursday with 192 players.
By Sunday, the playing field had whittled down to 48 players.
Of the original 192 players, more than 30 low-handicap golfers competed Wednesday to qualify for the 16 spots in the Championship division.
Brett Mamer was the low qualifier with a 3 under par 68 to earn the honor of having his name engraved on the Jim House Memorial plaque.
In the championship consolation bracket, Sean Callens defeated Beau Ashley in their 18hole match.
