HOLTVILLE — Last week the Holtville High girls’ soccer team opened postseason action hosting Julian in the firstround of the CIF-San Diego Section Div. V playoffs. The is the Vikings’ second year in a row to advance to the Div. V postseason as they earned the No. 11 seed last year, yet fell, 1-0, to No. 6 River Valley in the first round.

This year, Holtville secured the No. 8 seed allowing the team to host No. 9 Julian on Feb. 20.

The Vikings fought to come away with a 5-0 win over the Eagles to advance to the quarterfinals.

Helping Holtville to the win was Jasmine Velasquez.

The sophomore forward/ midfielder had two goals against Julian, to lead the team in the five-goal effort.

“I was just really happy that I was able to help the team,” she said.

Velasquez said she was inspired to join the team this season given her older sister, Jocelyn was a senior captain.

This made the young squad that much more excited to send out its senior class with a win.

“We were really excited,” the 15-year-old said. “We really wanted to get the first CIF win for our seniors. That was their last home game so we wanted to get it all this year.”
