In a story published Sunday, we reported funds for the California Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention program were trimmed. According to the Imperial County Department of Public Health, no funding was cut overall for the three-year term of the program’s grant, but the amount allocated to the second year is less than the first and third.

The request presented to the Imperial County Board of Supervisors was to sign an amended contract to reflect the correct allocation amount. This was done in order to correct an administrative error made in the contract. All other terms and conditions remain the same.

Mandy Hauck, fiscal support services representative of the Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Branch of the California Department of Public Health explained the original grant amount for Imperial County was $1,506,210. It was to be split evenly in increments of $502,070 among the fiscal years 2016-2017, 2017-2018 and 2018-2019.

“However, the way Imperial County operates, Imperial needs to amend the grant agreement regardless every year,” Hauck said.

A first amendment was made to the grant due to additional carry-in for year one that left the grant amount at $1,622,064. A second amendment decreased Imperial County’s grant amount for year two due to the decrease in the 2018 fiscal year. Imperial County’s funding for 2018 was $334,932 plus a carry-in of $50,240, for a total of $385,172.

The second amendment resulted in a decrease in funding from amendment 1 and left the three-year grant amount in $1,505,166, resulting in a decrease of $1,044, Hauck said.
