Spartans open over Bulldogs with win

EL CENTRO — The Central Union High track and field team opened the Imperial Valley League season Thursday, hosting Calexico High at Ed Raulston Track here.

The Spartans came away with a pair of wins, as the boys won 96.33-30.66 and the girls won 80-47.

For the boys, Central’s Paulo Flores won the 100 meters (11.75); Deandre Smith won the 200 (24.54) and the long jump; Aram Zavala won the 400 (54.76), and Luis Sandoval won the 800 (2:05.01) and the 1,600 (4:44.85).

Also for the Spartans, Joey Tarango won the 300-meter hurdles (42.49) and the triple jump; Angel Rico won the shot put and discus toss, and Steven Marquez won the high jump.

For Calexico, Nicholas Jimenez won the 110-meter hurdles (16.04), and Jesus Anguiano won the 3200 meters (11:29.41).

For the girls, Central’s Ida Villasenio­r won the 100 meters (13.88); Dayleth Palacios won the 200 meters (28.96); Katya Lopez won the 3200 meters (14:54.77), and Arely Pacheco won the 100-meter hurdles (19.70) and the 300-meter hurdles (56.78).

The Spartans swept the field events with Alexis Elizondo winning the shot put, Katlyn Koski winning the discus, Nohemi Anderson winning the high jump, Dalhia Ruiz winning the long jump and Gladys Lipscomb winning the triple jump.

For the Bulldogs, Arleth Escoto won the 400 meters (1:07.34), and Kristinna Olmedo won the 800 (2:45.90) and 1,600 meters (6:11.72).
