CALIFORNIA BRIEFS

-

Fifteen bald eagles were spotted during an organized count at sites across inland Southern California over the weekend.

The U.S. Forest Service says bald eagles commonly migrate south to spend their winter vacations around the region’s lakes, feasting on fish and ducks.

A group of more than 150 eagle-eyed volunteers and agency staff participated in the count near several lakes Saturday.

Ten adult bald eagles were seen, along with three juveniles and two chicks.

In February, two baby eagles hatched in mountains near Big Bear Lake — an event witnessed by nature lovers via an online live feed.

Saturday’s expedition was the final count for the 2018 winter season.

Bald eagles were driven to near extinction but have rebounded and were removed from the endangered species list a decade ago.

The average price of a gallon of regular-grade gasoline remained steady over the past two weeks, at $2.59.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg of the Lundberg Survey said Sunday that the prior price drop was halted by a rise in crude oil costs.

Gas in San Francisco was the highest in the contiguous United States at an average of $3.44 a gallon.

The lowest was in El Paso, Texas, at $2.19 a gallon.

The average price for diesel was up two cents, to $3.00 per gallon.

LA JOLLA Authorities say 13 Mexican immigrants found off the La Jolla coast in a boat were taken into custody.

The Los Angeles Times reports San Diego lifeguards intercepted the boat Saturday in the surf and towed it a little farther out to sea for the safety of those onboard.

San Diego lifeguard Lt. Rich Stropky told OnSceneTV that the U.S. Coast Guard got a report shortly before 7 a.m. that the boat appeared disabled.

A federal official says the 12 men and one woman were Mexican citizens who entered the United States illegally.

The Border Patrol took them into custody.

Stropky says no one injured.
