Two dead, three others injured after single-vehicle collision

-

A Calexico man and woman passed away after being involved in a single-vehicle collision Tuesday morning on Keystone Road, westbound of Austin Road, a California Highway Patrol news release reported.

Jonathan Partida, 22, died at the scene while Manuela Ontiveros-Pasos, 42, succumbed to her injuries after being transported to the hospital, the Imperial County Sheriff’s Coroner Office and Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner Office confirmed on Wednesday.

The Calexico residents were passengers in a 2002 Suzuki with three other occupants.

Gilda E. Fierro, a 33-yearold Calexico woman, is reported to have been the driver, while 32-year-old Mexicali resident Jose M. Arce Delgado and 24-year-old El Centro resident Jose G. Arce Delgado were passengers.

Fierro and the two male survivors sustained only minor injuries with complaints of pain to their back, arms, head and feet, CHP reported.

Fierro was the only person in the vehicle using a seat belt at the time of the collision, CHP said.

At approximately 6 a.m. Tuesday, Fierro was driving her vehicle westbound on Keystone, west of Austin Road, at a stated speed of 45 to 50 miles per hour.

Fierro allowed her vehicle to move to the right of the roadway and onto the unimproved shoulder.

Fierro, CHP reported, turned her attention from the roadway, and made an unsafe turning movement to the right and off the roadway.

CHP said Fierro attempted to correct her course and caused her vehicle to overturn. Partida and Ontiveros, who were not properly restrained, were ejected from the vehicle.

Partida reportedly died on the scene while Ontiveros was flown to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries at 9:50 a.m. Tuesday.

The collision remains under investigation, stated the news release.
