Wildcats open title defense with extra-inning win

CALEXICO — The Brawley Union High baseball opened Imperial Valley League play against Calexico High here on Tuesday night and opened its title defense with a 10-9 extra-inning win over the Bulldogs.

The game went eight innings after the teams played to an 8-8 tie after the regulation seven innings.

A combinatio­n of three arms helped Brawley seal the win with Ramiro Jimenez receiving the win. The junior threw 1/3 of an inning, giving up one hit, one unearned run and one walk, while striking out one.

Kristian Garcia threw one inning, giving up no hits and striking out two, while Robert Brodell went 6 2/3 innings giving up seven hits and two walks, while striking out nine.

At the plate for BUHS, Jacob Sapp went 3-3 with a double and two RBIs; Brodell went 1-4 with three RBIs; Nick Houchin went 1-5 with one RBI; Brandon Gammil went 2-5 with one RBI, and Jonathan Gonzalez went 1-4.

The teams will face off again at 7 p.m. Thursday in Brawley.
