Four killed in Helicopter crash north of Ocotillo
Four service members died on Tuesday after a helicopter accident that took place 12 miles north of Ocotillo, according to local officials.
Imperial County Fire Chief Alfredo Estrada Jr. confirmed the number of casualties and said the aircraft involved in the accident was conducting training out of the Naval Air Facility in El Centro.
A public affairs officer for the Naval Air Facility El Centro confirmed an incident involving a single helicopter north of Plaster City today at approximately 2:24 p.m.
Fire and Security units from Naval Air Facility El Centro responded to the scene along with helicopters from other units.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the brave service members and their families affected by this incident,” said Kristopher Haugh, public affairs officer for NAF El Centro. “We are thankful for the efforts of all who have responded to the scene and provided assistance,” he added.
According to information provided by Estrada later on Tuesday, the incident involved a Sikorsky CH53E Super Stallion Helicopter. No other casualties were reported.
Responding agencies to the accident site included NAFEC, U.S. Marine Corps, County Fire, and Imperial County Sheriff’s Office.
ICSO Chief Deputy Scott Sheppeard told Imperial Valley Press the area where the accident occurred was not accessible by road and Reach Air Ambulance was requested to reach the site.
NAFEC said the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Communications Strategy and Operations Unit will provide more information about the incident.
