BUHS softball team takes third place in Las Vegas tourney

LAS VEGAS — The Brawley Union High softball team posted a near-perfect record at the Spring Jamboree Tournament here last week, going 5-1 and finishing in third place at the annual competitio­n. This year’s event had a total of 44 teams in attendance.

The Wildcats opened tourney play on Thursday and concluded the Spring Jamboree on Saturday afternoon with a 10-7 victory over Banning, to snag the third-place honor.

Earning the win against Banning was junior Jalyn Ayala. Ayala finished with four strikeouts in the circle and, at the plate, had two doubles and three RBIs.

Also against Banning, Haylee Garcia had two hits and an RBI; Lilly Martinez had two hits; Mikalyn Emanuelli had a double and two RBIs; Dana Alvarado had a hit and two RBIs, and Brianna Hoffman and Stephanie Solis each had a hit and an RBI.

Also, Krystal Romero and Caryn Aguilar each had a hit.

Earlier in the day, the Wildcats suffered their only loss in the tourney, falling 8-6 to West Torrance in the semifinals of the championsh­ip bracket.

Martinez suffered the loss in the circle. At the plate, she had a double and a RBI. Emanuelli had three hits and an RBI; Ayala had two doubles and an RBI, and Savannah Contreras and Hoffman each had a hit and an RBI.

Also, Alvarado and Garcia each had a hit and Solis had an RBI.

On Friday, Brawley picked up a pair of wins over Oaks Christian and Shadow Ridge.

Brawley defeated Oaks Christian, 6-5, and Shadow Ridge, 8-6.

Martinez got the win over Oaks Christian, scattering seven hits and tallying one strikeout.

Offensivel­y, Alysia Gallardo had a double to drive in the winning run for Brawley. She had two RBIs in the game.

Martinez had a double and an RBI; Emanuelli had two doubles and an RBI; Contreras had two hits and an RBI; Alvarado had a hit and a RBI, and Garcia and Ayala each had a hit.

Picking up the win against Shadow Ridge was Ayala.

At the plate, Hoffman had two hits and three RBIs; Gallardo had two hits and two RBIs; Contreras and Garcia both had two hits each, including a double; and Emanuelli had a hit and two RBIs.

Also for Brawley, Aguilar had a hit, and Vanessa Ferrel had an RBI.

In Thursday’s tourney-opening games, the Wildcats topped Sierra Vista and San Pedro, both by a score of 8-4.

Ayala worked in the circle to earn both victories for the Wildcats.

Against Sierra Vista, Ayala gave up seven hits and had four strikeouts, and against San Pedro she had two strikeouts and gave up nine hits.

Offensivel­y versus Sierra Vista, Ayala had three hits with a double; Dilynn Gill had two hits, a home run and two RBIs; Gallardo had two hits and a RBI; Martinez had a home run and three RBIs, and Garcia and Alvarado each had two hits.

Also, Emanuelli had a hit and an RBI.

In the win over San Pedro, Ayala had two hits, including a double and an RBI; Contreras had two hits including a double and two RBIs; Garcia had two hits and an RBI; Alvarado had a hit and an RBI, and Hoffman had a hit.

Also for Brawley, Gallardo, Emanuelli and Angelina Rodriguez each had an RBI.

Brawley moves to 11-5 on the season at returns to action at 3:30 p.m. Friday, traveling to face Rancho Buena Vista as part of the Falcon Fiesta Tournament.

In Imperial Valley League action, the Wildcats are 1-1 following their 9-0 win over Palo Verde Valley on March 23.

In that game, Ayala got the win, allowing only two hits while striking out 14.

Offensivel­y, Ayala had two hits; Martinez had three hits, two home runs, a single and three RBIs; Gill had two hits and two RBIs, and Garcia had two hits.

Also for the Wildcats, Rodriguez had a double and two RBIs; Emanuelli had a hit and an RBI, and Hoffman had a hit.
