Dignity in detention in Imperial Valley
There have been so many stories lately about immigration issues and detention — especially here in California. It is a controversial and sensitive topic, and one that definitely deserves close attention. I believe the way in which we treat detained individuals reflects our humanity. We must ensure they are treated well in every aspect just as anyone should be.
As the executive director of the Sure Helpline Crisis Center, an organization in El Centro that is dedicated to advocating for victims of sexual abuse, I can tell you that the men and women held at the Imperial Regional Detention Facility in Calexico are being treated with great respect and dignity.
My colleagues and I have walked the halls and housing units of the detention center and have gotten to know IRDF is run very well. I have noticed a clean environment at all times. However, what I appreciate most about this facility is that the warden and his staff show genuine concern for each person in their care. The IRDF team is full of people who strive for excellence and do not fail in providing this to detainees.
I was especially thrilled to hear of IRDF partnership with the Mexican Consulate, and that together they provide detainees with the opportunity to earn their INEA, the Mexican equivalent of the GED. There are many other programs to help keep the men and women engaged and positive.
Through Health and Wellness programming at the facility, I have freely spoken with the detainees, and they tell me how well they are being treated. While they would prefer not to be detained at all, they are grateful to be at this facility.
I am aware of the negative connotation that Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention centers may hold at times. But IRDF holds positive, and I have learned this does not fit into negative comments one may hear. I think it is good for the community to know that we have a great example of how detention centers should be operated and how people should be treated, right here in our own backyard.
