Wildcats open with wins

THERMAL — The Brawley Union High baseball team opened play in the Coachella Valley Tournament here on Monday morning, taking on Calipatria High and host Coachella High.

The Wildcats came away with two wins, defeating the Hornets 10-0 and the Arabs 18-0.

Against Calipatria, Isaac Rios recorded the win on the mound. Rios went five innings, scattering two hits, issuing two walks and striking out four in the outing.

AJ Torres threw one inning in relief, giving up no hits and striking out one.

At the plate, the Wildcats collected 10 hits and were led by Tennessee Carranza, who went 2-3 with a home run and five RBIs.

Jude Litrell went 1-3 with a home run and one RBI; Jacob Sapp went 1-1 with a double; Jonathan Gonzalez went 2-3 with a triple and one RBI, and Kristian Garcia went 2-3 with two RBIs.

Also for Brawley, Max Morales went 1-1, and Nate Torrez went 1-3.

Against the Arabs, Torres picked up the win throwing four complete innings, scattering just two hits, while issuing one walk and striking out five

Jodeci Esqueda closed the game, delivering one inning of relief and giving up just one hit.

Offensivel­y, Brawley collected 17 hits and was led by Gonzalez, who went 3-4 with two RBIs and two doubles; Nick Houchin, who went 3-4 with three RBIs and one double, and Torres, who went 3-4 with three RBIs.

Also for the Wildcats, Brandon Gammil went 2-4 with two RBIs; Ramiro Jimenez went 1-1 with one RBI; Sapp went 1-3 with one RBI; Morales went 1-1 with a double and one RBI; Jeremiah De La Trinidad went 1-1 with one RBI; Litrell went 1-2 with one RBI, and Carranza went 1-3 with one RBI.
