YouTube shooter told family she ‘hated’ the company City to pay $2M to family of man shot by police
A woman who believed she was being suppressed by YouTube and “hated” the company opened fire at their headquarters, wounding three people before taking her own life.
Investigators said they don’t believe Nasim Aghdam specifically targeted the three victims Tuesday. But a law enforcement official said Aghdam had a longstanding dispute with the company.
The official said investigators believe Aghdam used the name Nasime Sabz online.
A website in that name decried YouTube’s policies and said that YouTube was trying to “suppress” content creators. The official spoke to AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case publicly.
Aghdam’s father said his daughter was angry YouTube stopped paying for videos she posted on the platform and warned police she might go to the company’s headquarters.
Long Beach will pay $2 million to the family of a mentally disabled man who was killed by police at an arcade three years ago.
Attorneys for the family of Mharloun Saycon announced Wednesday that the City Council had settled a civil rights lawsuit.
The lawyers filed court papers in March to have the case dismissed.
Saycon was shot several times after police answered reports of a disturbance at Looff’s Lite-A-Line gaming parlor. Officers said they shot the 39-year-old after he refused to drop a knife.
His family argued that Saycon wasn’t a threat and alleged that police used excessive force and were illequipped to handle someone with a mental illness.
