I n an effort to recognize some of the brightest student-athletes in San Diego and Imperial counties, the CIF-San Diego Section began compiling an All-Academic team honors list.

The list honors teams in each sport that compile the highest combined unweighted grade point average in their region of the CIF-San Diego Section.

The five regions of the San Diego Section are North, South, Metropolitan San Diego, East and Inland (Imperial County).

The CIF-San Diego Section recently released its All-Academic Teams for the winter sports season, with the teams from Brawley Union, Holtville and Imperial highs snagging the Inland Region honors.

The Wildcats picked up a total of three team honors, while the Vikings followed with two and Imperial closed with one.

For Brawley, the boys’ basketball, boys’ soccer and boys’ wrestling teams all earned academic honors, producing another strong showing for the school this past sports season.

In the fall, the Wildcats’ football, girls’ tennis and boys’ cross-country programs all earned the same honor.

For the Vikings, the girls’ basketball and girls’ soccer programs picked up the winter team honors, also adding to their academic accolades this school year.

Holtville also had a strong showing on the fall all-academic list as the volleyball, girls’ cross-country and girls’ golf teams were also honored.

Rounding out the winter all-academic team honors was Imperial High, as the Tigers girls’ wrestling team posted the highest unweighted GPA.

In addition to honoring the teams with the highest GPA, the CIF-San Diego Section also honors the individual on each team with the highest weighted cumulative GPA.

This student athlete is known as the Section Scholar.

From Brawley Union High, the boys’ basketball Section Scholar was Anthony Quiroz; the boys’ soccer Section Scholar was Angel Teran, and the boys’ wrestling Section Scholar was Dylan West.

For the Vikings, Angele Gandevia and Yahaira Cortez were the Section Scholars for the girls’ basketball and girls’ soccer teams, respectively.

These are Gandevia’s and Cortez’s second times appearing on the list, as Gandevia was also the Vikings’ volleyball Section Scholar and Cortez earned the Section Scholar last season, also for soccer.

The Tigers’ lone Section Scholar of the winter sports season was female wrestler, Salma Martinez.
