110 PIECES OF ART
a tribute to Calexico anniversary
CALEXICO — As the city of Calexico celebrates its 110th anniversary this week, a proper celebration could not be had without commemorating its rich history of art.
A 110th anniversary art exhibit will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the Carmen Durazo Cultural Arts Center here. The exhibit, which was also open Tuesday and Wednesday, features 110 pieces of artwork from local artists.
The city completed its goal of receiving and displaying specifically 110 pieces in honor of its anniversary, city of Calexico’s Community Services Director Sandra Tauler said.
There was no specific theme set for the exhibit, and all kinds of mediums were accepted, including photographs, paintings, drawings and sculptures, among others.
Tauler believed the oldest piece on display was a black and white photograph showing the Carrillo and Moreno families that was taken by Pete Padilla in 1964.
Both modern and vintage pieces are on display.
“We also had pieces from some people who already passed away,” Tauler said. “Their children brought their art or family heirlooms.” The largest piece on display was a two-dimensional transparency painting titled “La Valentina,” created by Brawley resident Pablo Garcia.
Standing at 5 feet by 6 feet on a stretched canvas, the painting was completed in September 1999 and took 73 days to finish.
