Legacy Award is about more than popularity
It’s no small thing for a business to win a Readers’ Choice award. The honor signifies excellence and approval within a selected category of service.
In one way or another, virtually all of our winners have strived for that recognition and have been delighted when they’ve achieved it. But these awards, as coveted as they may be, are of a moment. Next year, it may be somebody else’s name on the certificate.
Some businesses, however, transcend the moment to become a part of the very fabric of the community. One thing that marks them is their durability. The great ones are always built to last.
They also possess ubiquity. Everybody knows them.
And they have a strong sense of community. They understand the importance of giving back.
It’s for businesses such as these the Imperial Valley Press created its annual Readers’ Choice Legacy Award.
The recipient of the award is chosen by a panel that takes into account six criteria: business tradition in Imperial Valley, history of service, community involvement, notoriety beyond Imperial Valley, contributions to charity and education, and level of respect enjoyed within the community.
This is the fourth year of the award. Past winners are Johnny’s Burritos in 2015, Imperial Stores in 2016 and Vessey and Co. in 2017.
This year’s winner will be announced at an awards banquet on May 16.
