Vice President expected in Calexico Monday

- STAFF REPORT

CALEXICO — Several media outlets, including CNN, the Los Angeles Times and the

San Diego Union Tribune, are reporting Vice President Mike Pence is scheduled to appear here Monday to inspect progress on the border fence and to address Department of Homeland Security and Border Patrol employees.

The White House web site and the vice president’s official Facebook page make no mention of the visit, nor does the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol website.

However, the LA Times has cited an unnamed White House official in reporting Pence is scheduled to arrive at the Naval Air Facility in El Centro at 10:20 a.m. The newspaper reported the official as saying Pence will meet Border Patrol officials including Chief Patrol Agent Gloria Chavez, Director of Field Operations Pete Flores and Yuma Branch Director Sylvia Carrizozo to discuss Calexico’s border barrier system and replacement project.

The report also said Pence will then talk to local DHS and Border Patrol employees about their work and needs before leaving sometime in the early afternoon.

This would be the second visit to Calexico by a high-ranking White House official this month. U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was in the Imperial Valley April 18 to visit the border and to collect feedback from frontline DHS personnel.
