Eagles top Spartans in extras

EL CENTRO — The cross-town rival baseball teams from Central Union and Southwest highs met for an Imperial Valley League match at the Spartans’ home on Tuesday night.

Southwest ended up taking home the 5-2 victory in eight innings to improve to 6-13 on the season and 2-7 in IVL.

The Eagles jumped on the board first after Francisco Ulloa and Ismael Cordova scored in the first and second innings, respective­ly, to take an early 2-0 lead.

The Spartans ended up tying the game in the bottom of the fifth after Jaeden Castillo and TJ Cordero scored on the same play.

The score remained tied after the regulation seven innings, sending the game into eighth.

It was then the Eagles broke open the game with a three-run inning that ultimately decided the game.

Earning the win on the mound for Southwest was junior Ethan Ross. Ross tossed 2/3 of an inning, giving up no hits, while striking out one.

Marco Lara had a solid start on the rubber for the Eagles, going 6 1/3 innings, while scattering four hits and striking out eight batters.

At the plate for Southwest, Ross went 1-4 with two RBIs; Ulloa went 2-5 with a double and one RBI, and Ezequiel Barraza, Logan Chell, Jose Perez, Omar Jimenez and Reece Quintero all had a hit.

The teams are back in action at 7 p.m. today, facing off at Southwest High.
