These are not the people to lecture us on good taste

Have you ever seen anything funnier than the White House Correspondents’ Dinner? Not the comedy; Michelle Wolf was funny, but she really wasn’t even as funny as President Barack Obama or George W. Bush had been working the crowd themselves in a time before the current president was too petty and proud to accept a little roasting. Today’s Commander and Chief leaves town and leaves his aides to take the usually good-natured abuse on his behalf. I’m sure that will be a big part of the next “profiles in courage” novel.

There has been a great deal of hand wringing and pearl clutching over Michelle Wolf’s acerbic comedy routine that took down Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Kellyanne Conway.

Since Wolf made her eye shadow and Handmaid’s Tale jokes, we have seen multi-millionaires complaining about being attacked by “elites” and the conservative faux outrage machine has been in overdrive.

One writer even complained about the line of jokes that were told in front of political professionals and former Major League Baseball players and coaches.

Really?

I know the rating system is usually age related to protect young eyes and ears from inappropriate material. I had no idea that baseball professionals were considered “polite company.”

I can hear it now, “Hey, watch your language, guys! There are retired baseball players present.”

All of the worry is for Sanders who was the focus of several less than kind jokes. Many have said she was brave to endure the humorous abuse. Seriously?

I hate it when people are told not to say mean things about professional women. That is so demeaning. Be mean to the men, but be nice to the delicate women. Saying they need protection is peak sexism.

Sanders and Conway aren’t “wives and mothers” who need to be protected by Ward Cleaver when Eddie Haskell acts up.

These are women who have reached incredibly prestigious and powerful positions in the most prominent country in the world. I don’t think the mean lady and her unkind jokes damaged their tender ears.

Sanders is a woman who told reporters to calm down and realize the president was just telling a joke when they asked about Donald Trump making fun of Rex Tillerson’s low IQ.

When asked about Trump’s alleged comments about Tillerson, Sanders smirked and said, “He made a joke, maybe you guys should get a sense of humor and try it sometime.”

Tillerson was soon fired upon returning from Ethiopia and this same administration joked with reporters that the Secretary of State had been fired while in the bathroom suffering from digestive distress.

At least no one made fun of his eye shadow.

This is the daughter of a former Governor of Arkansas who fancies himself a Twitter comedian.

I’m sure she’s heard a tawdry tale or two around the dinner table.

Gov. Huckabee tweeted the day before the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, “If you lack a sense of humor, get offended by slights you create or just can’t bring yourself to tolerate those you disagree with, the (sic) DO NOT watch my show 2nite(sic)! You will be triggered and will need a pony, popsicle and Playdough to cope!”

So obviously, Huckabee was fine with the jokes at his daughter’s expense, right? Nope. I guess she needed a pony and a popsicle because he was tweeting this 24 hours after his “my show” tweet. “The WHCD is supposed to celebrate the 1st Amendment. Instead, the celebrated bullying, vulgarity and hate. They got all dressed up so they would look nicer when they had a hired gun savagely attack their guests. Do they really wonder why America has no respect for them? Sad!”

Someone sounds triggered. Maybe his Playdough was dried up.

It’s nice to see Gov. Huckabee has gone full Trumpian and forgotten all about being a Southern Baptist pastor.

I don’t have enough room in a column to explore the “what-abouts” with ad hominem attacks on Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama from those on the right side of the comedic aisle. Have you ever heard bawdy comments about Nancy Pelosi? Give me a break.

I’m not defending Wolf’s comedy. Jokes about looks are lazy and tasteless. However, I am not letting this administration and their lackeys be the ones to cry foul. Trump eats his Big Macs in the Oval Office because he insulted and bullied other candidates out of the GOP Presidential Primary. This is the man who claimed Ted Cruz’s father killed President John F. Kennedy, called Cruz’s wife (and fellow candidate Carly Fiorina) ugly and threatened to blast Cruz’s wife’s secrets to the world.

Let’s not spend our time dabbing his crocodile tears over eye shadow jokes at a roast.
